Svetlana Shigroff

Svetlana Shigroff (b. 1982) is an artist, designer and educator whose professional work has spanned both the commercial and creative industries. As a visual artist, her tapestries and sculptures use surrealist themes to explore identity, violence and [collective] trauma. As a designer, she employs post industry waste textiles and secondhand goods as the basis for sustainable design and production. Svetlana’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Svetlana teaches Fashion and Sculpture courses at Santa Monica College. Svetlana earned her Bachelor of Science with Honors and a Postgraduate Degree in Tertiary Education from The University of Queensland, Australia. 

 

Svetlana currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

About me

In addition to her role at Santa Monica College, Svetlana has taught independent workshops in her private studio and at institutions such as the Palm Springs Art Museum. She currently develops and leads workshops at LA Tactile Lab, where she specializes in innovative textile techniques and material exploration.

With over 14 years of professional experience in California, Svetlana has built a versatile career in apparel manufacturing, custom garment and jewelry design, costuming, and visual arts. Her expertise includes garment construction for live stage productions, textile techniques such as appliqué, freeform embroidery, and tufting, as well as sustainable practices in art and small-scale fashion production.

Svetlana has been recognized for her contributions to the arts, including her residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2023 and participation in the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art in 2022.
